Abstract

Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) is an approach that helps to guide actions needed to reorient and transform agricultural systems so that development takes place effectively. Three key objectives of this approach which integrate three key dimensions of sustainable development (social, economic and environmental) are: (i) to sustainably increase agricultural productivity and incomes; (ii) to adapt and build resilience to climate change; and (iii) to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As more than two-third of India’s population reside in the rural areas and around half of population is engaged in agriculture sector to earn their livelihood; therefore, agriculture is vital to India’s growth prospects. And since around 60 per cent of agriculture is dependent on rainfall; therefore, CSA approach is a way out to address both food security and climate change.
